Moss 3 - Moss Now

Stirling drove with unflustered artistry that never had an off-day, he rarely made an error and, but for his slavish patriotism, he might have been world champion more than once. When he did drive "foreign", in his own private Maserati, he outclassed Juan Manuel Fangio's Mercedes in the 1954 Italian grand prix before his engin failed. The 'accident' ended his career at 33. What marks Moss out over modern drivers is that he raced when all top drivers competed in a wide variety of car types, not just the world championship, and he was successful, even dominant, in all of them.

Born September 17 1929; London.

Formula One career 1951-62.

Grands prix 66. Wins 16.
