Eltham motorcyclist Peter Todeschini hopes he never has cause to test the protective merits of his latest purchase.
He reluctantly cast aside his much-worn leather jacket and spent $750 on an inflatable one after an ultimatum from his wife.
"She told me I wasn't allowed back on my bike (a Harley Davidson Sportster) until I got one, so that was a pretty good reason," he said. Mr Todeschini, who spent months in hospital after a horrific accident 25 years ago, is now a convert: "It's bloody good ... it makes me feel safe, like wearing a seatbelt, and it could be the difference between life and death."
The Alfred hospital spokesman Peter Cameron agrees, saying authorities should consider the safety merits of inflatable jackets. Professor Cameron said the number of motorbike riders admitted to The Alfred with serious injuries had jumped from 149 in 2001-02 to 234 in 2006-07.
Yvoir Hingee, from inflatable jacket manufacturer Motoair, said only a few hundred had been sold in Australia compared with more than 4000 each year in Japan.
He said many riders either did not know the jackets were on the market or did not think they needed them.
"The problem is motorbike retailers and manufacturers strongly prefer not to make riders aware of the riding dangers and need for airbag safety as obviously it affects their sales," he said.

Thanks to MOTORCYCLE AIR BAG JACKET MOTOAIR 2000,when the traffic accident occurred,I safely went through the casualty. It happened one day while I was riding my motorcycle in the Paris streets.
All of a sudden, a man rushed out to the crossroad. In order not to bump into him, I fell from the motorcycle and slid on the ground for about 10 meters. Therefore,I would like to express my great gratitude for the extraordinary inventor. I sincerely hope there shall be no more accident hereafter.
